Before you buy silicon wafer, you need to know exactly what you are getting in to. Wafers are measured primarily by two measures: cleanliness and planarity. How pure the silicon in the wafer is and how flat the wafer itself is can be the difference in finding the wafer that works for you and ordering the wrong component for your next project.

Cleanliness

Cleanliness is one of the key components in assessing wafer quality. Light point defects are unwanted particles that are found on the surface of a wafer. The cleanliness quality is determined by the total number of light point defects, also known as LPDs, are found across a certain area of the wafer. This is only one of the ways wafer quality is measured. Planarity also plays a big part in measuring the quality of the wafer.

Planarity

It is defined as how something lying in one plane of existence or, in this case, how flat something is. In reference to silicon wafers, planarity refers to how thin the wafer is. Typically, wafers are ultra-thin and are designed to be as flat as possible while still conducting electricity. Different devices require different thicknesses and wafers come in all different types of thicknesses. Your wafer supplier should help you find out exactly what you need in order for your next project.
