The wafer reclaim process begins with a visual inspection of incoming wafers for fatal flaws such as chipped edges or serious scratches. Wafers that pass this test are then measured for thickness. This ensures that sufficient material exists to allow for a successful reclaim. If, after all that, it is deemed that the wafer can be reclaimed, it then goes through a chemical stripping process. After it is stripped and polished, it is chemically cleaned, washed, rinsed with ultra-pure deionized water, and dried using both industry standard and proprietary techniques to complete the reclaim process.
When it comes to reclaimed wafers, they are suited for pretty much everything a new wafer is, with a few exceptions.
Reclaimed wafers can cut wafer expense for both chip makers and semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Typically, reclaimed wafers cost one-third or even one-fourth of the cost of a new wafer. They are especially cost-effective for 100-mm through 300-mm wafer sizes.
